Job Description

  • All personnel in this group shall be graduates of high school or GED equivalence.
  • Two (2) years of experience after achieving journeyman status as a welder. Journeyman’s level of skill is developed from both formal training and work experience. The term Journeyman is specifically defined as a term applied to a worker who has completed a specified training program as an APPRENTICE MASTER TITLE (any industry) in learning a trade or craft, or can give written proof of five years of qualifying experience for such trade or craft.
  • Non-Nuclear Structural Welders (Trade Skill WL, Designator W1) to perform the tasks identified below in support of various submarine overhauls.
  • Perform Structural welding of deck structures, support braces, foundations, or hangers using one of a number of processes such as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) onboard submarines, in buildings, and in the field.
  • Prepare finished welds by hand grinding or burning to meet visual acceptance standards.Set up and operate stud welding equipment as needed onboard submarines, in buildings, and in the field.
  • Install hot work protection and/or build weld containments for fire prevention.
  • Perform fire watch duties during welding operations.
  • All of the personnel provided must be qualified in SMAW and be fully qualified in all positions to weld per Technical Publication S9074-AGIB-010/
  • Welder Qualification Record verifying tests performed in three positions evaluated visually and by radiography, ultrasonically, or by bend test must be provided. .Alternatively, the welder tests may be performed in the 6G position (from TP-248) provided the test is performed using a singular weld process. No dual process qualifications will be accepted.
  • Candidates will qualify utilizing a Test assembly thickness of .375” or higher.Qualification testing performed with an approved Butt weld joint design from MIL-STD 22.Filler material to be used during testing must be one of the following- Mil- 9018-M,10018M, 10718M, 11018M, 12018M or 14018M for the SMAW process.
  • Test evaluated IAW the requirements contained in S9074-A-GIB-018/248(Performed IAW T9074-AS-GIB-010/271, (TP 271) evaluated to class 1requirements of MIL-STD 2035.
  • Candidate must be capable of passing Jaeger J-1 of equivalent Annual Vision Certification (glasses or no glasses).
  • Shall be trained in electrical safety practices for non-electrical workers.

  1. Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromates and Beryllium - Trained and qualified to work in an environment where heavy metals exist (e.g., lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromates, beryllium), in accordance with OSHA, federal, state, and local standards and requirements for shipyard work
  2. Negative Pressure Respirator - contractor personnel provided must be trained in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.134
  3. Confined Space Safety - contractor personnel provided must be trained in accordance with 29 CFR 1915 Subpart B
  4. Grinder Safety – 29 CFR 1910.215, Abrasive Wheel Machinery; ANSI STD B7.1-1988, Safety Requirements for the Use, Care, and Protection of Abrasive Wheels; ANSI STD B186.1-1984, Safety Code for Portable Air Tools
    •MUST be capable of obtaining a fully Adjudicated DoD Clearance. Candidates with a current fully adjudicated DoD Clearance (RED Badge ONLY) will be given priority for hiring. MUST be a US Citizen
